The curriculum gives background information, exciting hands-on learning adventures and more to help students and teachers explore the outdoors in conjunction with a nearby nature center, while gaining an understanding of their relationship to the Chesapeake Bay.

Ornithological Significance of
Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge
Globally Important Bird Area Blackwater NWR and the adjacent Fishing Bay Wildlife Management Area are recognized by Audubon's Important Bird Areas (IBA) Program as a globally Important Bird Area (Blackwater-Fishing Bay Marshes IBA). The brackish marsh habitats here support breeding populations of two species on Birdlife International's Red Data List: Black Rail (Near Threatened) and Saltmarsh Sharp-tailed Sparrow (Vulnerable). Blackwater-Fishing Bay Marshes IBA derives its "globally important" status from these species.
